Indonesia topples Malaysia as SE Asia top Corn importer

Indonesia is set to become South East Asia's top corn importer this year, this will end Malaysia 15 year run, this is due to rising poultry demand and a poor domestic crop, the US Grains Council said on Monday. As the largest economy in SE Asia Indonesia will be likely to import 3.2 million tons of corn as opposed to the 1.6 million imported last year. One reason for this growth is that over the past year Indonesia has had bad weather and lots of wet conditions. Poultry is the growth driver due to consumption picking up at the same time, Indonesia, which has some 240 million people, is expected to post economic growth of about 6.6 percent this year, boosted by domestic consumption and mineral exports.
