At the University of Plymouth they have been looking at biofuel products. The co products can often be used in animal nutrition. Plymouth working in co operation with AB Vista biofuel derived yeast protein concentrate (YPC) have been evaluating YPC as part of the ingredient of a novel feed in carp diets. A novel yeast co-product obtained from a bio-ethanol process in which wheat was the predominant feedstock was tested in a series of iso-nitrogenous (38 percent crude protein) and iso-lipidic (8 percent) diets for juvenile mirror carp (Cyprinus carpio). Biotechnology Industry Organisation (BIO) calls for tax credits
The Biotechnology Industry Organisation (BIO) representing the biofuel industry in America is calling for cellulosic biofuels tax credits to be extended to help companies raise the funds they need to build biorefineries. "The cellulosic biofuels production tax credit and the accelerated depreciation for cellulosic biofuel property have the potential to unlock this vital project financing. Algae biofuels also need to be eligible for these credits. But the December 31, 2012 expiration date for these credits prevents project developers from leveraging their full value," says Brent Erickson, executive VP of BIO’s industrial and environmental section. Algae looked upon as possible biofuel and animal feed source
In the future algae could be a valuable source for the feed industry and for the biofuel industry but only if the energy sector and agriculture sector can focus their efforts. Senator Edgardo Angara said "A lot of research still needs to be conducted before algal biofuels can be as cheap as fossil fuels. But algae are already utilized for nutraceuticals and animal feeds for their proteins and omega-3 fatty acids. We may not have to put up subsidies for algal R&D in biofuels, because a processed algae industry in the country may already be lucrative in itself." Read more ...

First round of algae based trails for animal feed is complete
Green Plains Renewable Energy, Inc and BioProcess Algae, LLC have announced the successful completion of the first round of the algae based trails. "This was the first time we tested algae as a poultry feed-product and many of the qualities found were similar to high protein soymeal, but with higher energy content," said Dr. Parsons a leading expert in the field of poultry sciences. US are now using more corn for fuel than feed
In the United states, more corn is being used for animal feed and biofuels than human consumption. Its claimed that out of every 10 ears of corn grown only two actually goes directly as human food. The other are shared equally between animal feeds and ethanol. This significant shift in the use of corn from human feed to fuels, could represent a tipping point in the ongoing conflict between food and fuel demand in the future. This shift is dominated by the subsides that the ethanol industry receives. Read more ...
